Softwares |
|
| |
Incredibly there are more open source tools than one would find on any platform. Basically due to the number of developers one would find in the open source realm. Multimedia, Servers, Database tools, Virtualisation, Web development tools, Programming tools and so much more are beneficiaries to the Softwares constantly being developed on open source platforms every now and then. Though not always as easy to use compared to applications meant for Windows or Mac O.S, Linux Softwares these days tend to match up in terms of productivity and in some cases surpass expectations.

Community |
|
| |
Open Source as it appears has the most fanbase when it comes to community development. Matter of fact, what we all enjoy from softwares to servers and more had actually undergone scrutiny by a community of developers before being ported on any platform or Linux O.S. So many communitiies exist for anyone willing to learn or contribute. All Linux Distributions or Applications tend to have a community of developers which one could participate in.

| |
Most Open Source communities provide a forum or news group anyone could join to either contribute or learn from. believe me i found this very useful comming from a region where very few Open source enthusiast exist. I learnt a lot from these guyz! they great working with. |

Open Source really is King when you talk about Developers forums and Applications development in general. So many applications are being developed so fast, producing high tech tools for anyone anytime anywhere. Multimedia players, Hardware drivers, Network tools, Kernel patches and so much more are some benefits of Open Source develpers efforts to ensure quality and stable platforms. |

JBoss+ |
|
| |
Fedora 11 currently has netbeans 6.5 pre-installed by default and the Jboss project which is a division or Redhat are doing an incredible job, making life easy for Java developers and application developers in general. Linux developers now have a suite of development tool which can match up with any O.S platform for basically any project within Linux environment. |

Ogg+Theora |
|

So much pressure had been on the open source community to produce a standard multimedia toolkit comprising of a default media player, a free video and audio codec of their own and of course a player which by default could play almost any codec available today (mp3's, Divx, DVD, VCD, HD, mp4), Contrary to going to a repository to download these. Ogg has been to standard audio compressed codec for open source community (which i find better than mp3's), and Theora the video codec of choice for open source developers as well. |

Databases |
|
| |
Open Source indeed brought more than Linux as a gift to Information Technology in General. So many useful Dynamic Database softwares emerged through this movement. Famous of all is MySQL and PostgreSQL. Useful and incredibly fast, these tools can match up with other Database toolkits like Orale plus they are shiped with most Linux Distros by default. I find MySQL very useful anyday anytime in particular.
