Redhat Linux |
The worlds no.1 Linux Operating system |
Redhat Enterprise Linux is a superb operating system any system admistrator should have. It's unique, fast, stable & very reliable. It's default installer - Anaconda to me is about the easiest O.S installer. This commercial distribution comes with so much development kit ranging from database tools, web servers, file servers, it's own java development toolkit through it's Jboss project ( Jboss.com ), compilers, Virtualisation tools & so much more. Redhat insists they dont sell software, rather they offer support beyond what you find in other propriety operating systems. Currently Being Used by Amazon.com & NYSE ( the largest stock exchange on the globe). One DVD is all you need for a full installation. Installs it's applications in rpm(s) format or tarballs. For about $80 or so, RHEL is definitely the best Operating system the Linux world has to offer. |

Fedora Linux |
Fedora is a free version of Redhat Linux for developers |
Now if ever you think an operating system is too good to be free, you might be thinking right. Fedora is the free version of Redhat Linux, released to the public & developed in partnership with a community of hardworking Linux developers. This distribution is released at least once every six - seven months & can be configured to suit any of your every need. A java development kit ( Jboss.org ), Windows cross compiler to develope, test & even run MS Windows applications within the comfort of your Fedora operating system, lots of open source applications, Virtualisation , Servers, Networking tools & much more. You'll need about one DVD for a full installation. Fedora installs it's applications in rpm(s) fromat or tarballs & even boast of more applications than RHEL (though most are beign tested ). |

Ubuntu Linux |
Ubuntu is a debian based Linux O.S |
| Yeah! this fine debian based Linux distro is easy to use & install, one c.d is all it takes. Gnome desktop as it's default & claims it will remain a free Linux distribution. Ubuntu is fast gaining grounds around the globe & even in Nigeria, most Linux users ( though little ) i know of, make use of this baby right here. It comes with not as much applications compared to other top Linux distros, but the basic servers, network tools & add-ons. Installs it's applications with .deb files or tarballs. The KDE version can be installed from another c.d, packaged as KUbuntu for KDE lovers. Ubuntu offers support for users & is a lovely O.S to try on. |

OpenSuse |
OpenSuse is Linux Operating System |
Famous nowadays for it's alliance with Microsoft some years back, I still dont get what the deal was all about but i do know it pissed a lot of Linux developers off. Besides the drama, Suse is a superb Linux operating system. I think of it like a German machine. It's free version OpenSuse is a nice alternative for developers who love to try out something new but secured as well. Suse comes with a lot of servers, applications, development kit & more. It install applications in it's own rpm(s) or tarballs. Suse ranks amongst one of the best Linux distro available today, but still has a lot of convincing to do as regards it's commitment to the open source world. One DVD is all you need for a full installation. |

Linux Mint |
Linux Mint is a debian based Linux O.S similar to Ubuntu but a lot easier. |
This Linux Distribution was derived from the famous debian based Ubuntu Linux. Linux Mint is suitable for multimedia purposes and provides support for mp3's, DVD's,mp4's and more multimedia codecs by default. It's stable, easy to use and fast. We usually advise Lnux newbies to try out a distro like Linux Mint before integrating to advanced Linux distro's like Fedora, RHEL or the infamous CentOS. To get the full benefit or to enjoy a complete open source application support and updates, you'll have to install additional c.d's or connect to the internet via their repository and get this O.S running as a beast. |

CENTOS |
Community Enterprise Linux |
This Linux Distribution is not just a Redhat workalike but a community of Linux experts who devised a new breed of Enterprise Linux, directly from the world's most dependable and leading Linux distribution (Redhat Enterprise Linux) to form what many consider to be a clone of RHEL. CENTOS is based on the releases of RHEL, and is maintained by the Community as oppssed to RHEL. Beign a free software, absolutely no warranty is given by the developers, but be sure to get plenty of help from the forum or community of developers. This O.S meets the needs of Enterprise users or platforms and is as stable as RHEL itself. It is a superb alternative for people who cant afford Redhat Enterprise Linux, os people who need a free and stable Enterprise Linux. If you consider RHEL stable, then CENTOS should be..... |
